We have had a great week of new learning in Year 3!
Home Practice
We have been very impressed with all the book changing that has been happening this term. We have seen lots of progress in everyone's reading. Keep it up!
On Sumdog this week we have set 3 challenges. If you finish or find them too tricky, you can access Sumdog Training which will set questions to practice weaker skills.
Your spellings this week are the first 20 statutory Year 3 spellings. Have a go and do lots of practise!

This week in Year 3
In English, we have started Cliffhanger by Jacqueline Wilson. It's an exciting story that's keeping us all on the edge of our seats! We have been acting out parts of the story and writing our own play scripts.
In Maths, we have been solving time problems, honing our skills in reading clocks and calculating durations. We have also been solving problems with the calendar and learning the months of the year.
In History, we have been learning about hieroglyphics, exploring the fascinating writing system of ancient Egypt.
Our Art lessons have been equally exciting as we evaluated our animated drawings and planned our final projects, which will be ready to show next week.
In PE, we have continued with our cricket practice and have also been gearing up for Sports Day, working hard to improve our skills and teamwork.
In RE, we started our new topic on choices and how our beliefs can influence the way people feel.
It’s been a busy and productive week, and we’re looking forward to more learning and fun next week!

This week in Year 2
English
This week we started our new novel 'Greta and the Giants' by Zoe Tucker. We have written setting descriptions for the forest using great vocabulary, written a WANTED poster for the Giants and speech bubbles for their feelings.
Maths
This week we finished our measuring unit and started place value.
RE
This week we discussed all the scripture we have read and explored so far and created a story map.
Forest School
We went on a circular walk around our top field and noticed lots of changes. If you are on a walk and you trip over a root or something falls from a tree near you it might be the woodland Boggards, very mischievous creatures from folklore.We collected natural materials which we used to make a Boggart. We used clay on a stick to make the head of the Boggart.
Science
We planted seeds in different environments. We have our own bean diaries where we are writing the changes each day.

Spelling Challenge
We have had a fantastic week in Year 5.
In English, we have been learning about the features of a newspaper report and then writing our own about the mysterious vanishings from our class novel Varjak Paw.
In maths, we have been solving problems involving measures. These were tricky but everybody tried really hard. We have also been learning at reflecting shapes, and fractions.
In geography, we continued with our new topic all about Europe. We used maps of Europe to so that we could identify the countries we have visited. We also used an atlas to locate the countries which have qualified for the Euros 2024. Come on England!
In PE, we played different games to practise our underarm throws. Everybody is getting very good at this! We finished off our PE lesson with a game of cricket which was so much fun!
In RE, we spoke about the gifts of the Holy Spirit and how we can use these gifts for good. We then wrote prayers for the Year 4 children who will be doing their First Holy Communion this weekend.

We have been watching and discussing clips from the TV programme Mr Benn.
We have been thinking how to make the zoo animals happy in their enclosures and creating new zoo animals.
Maths
This week we have continued to revisit addition and subtraction using different games. We have also revisited 3D shapes and repeating patterns.
R.E.
This week we learnt about Pentecost being the birthday of the Church and we discussed how the Holy Spirit helps us.
Physical Development
We learnt bat and ball skills. We also played our first team game.
Expressive Arts and Design
We have been investigating and describing animal patterns, trying to finish the patterns ourselves.
Understanding the World
This week we continued to learn about maps. We have been exploring Blackpool Zoo's map, ready for our class trip next week!
Forest School

In English, we perfected our speaking parts for our Parent Assembly. We also wrote an article about a job we would like to do when we are older. We told the reader what the job was and why we liked it, explained what the job involved, and mentioned any problems or disadvantages we could think of.
In Maths, we identified and learnt the difference between acute and obtuse angles. In addition, we compared and ordered angles where one of the lines was either vertical or horizontal. This week, we have also identified vertical and horizontal lines of symmetry in a variety of shapes. We found this tricky, but showed great resilence!
In RE, we read ‘Paul’s happiness’ based on 2 Corinthians 6:3-10. We talked about how Paul felt and what kept him going. We then chose our favourite line from the passage and explained how we can relate this to our daily lives.
In Science, learnt about the structure of a tooth. In addition, we learnt how plaque is formed and tooth decay is caused. We then consolidated our learning about how to keep our teeth and gums healthy.
In PSHE, we continued our topic about ‘plastic pollution’ and considered who is more or less responsible for polluting our oceans. It was an interesting discussion and we decided that it is everybody’s responsibility to be environmentally aware and make thoughtful choices.

This week we continued our learning through the story of The Enormous Crocodile. We loved discussing all the wonderful adjectives used by Roald Dahl.
We planned and wrote our own version of the story. We are concentrating really hard at making our writing look beautiful on the page and using correct spellings.
Phonics
Some of us have been revising ph as in photo and or as in thorn and aw as in prawn.
Some of us have started to learn the different air spellings: air in chair and ear in bear. We have also been revising the split digraph sounds.
Maths
We continued our learning about halving. We also learned about quarters of shapes.
R.E.
We read the story of Pentecost and learnt about how the Holy Spirit is represented in the Bible. We talked about how the disciples witnessed blowing wind and how flames appeared. We then used the iPads to search for the word 'hello' in different languages, as the disciples began speaking in new languages.
Art
We made our birds! We chose a piece of cardboard for the body, sketched feathers and glued them on, then twisted paper clips for the feet. We were all so resilient, especially when it got a bit tricky!
Computing
This week we have been learning how to code. We learnt how to log onto the code.org website using our new passwords. We then began following simple coding instructions.
Forest School
In one session we used the new slack line and rope ladder.
We also looked closely at a wasps nest which was given to us by a local farmer.
We played a game in two teams, one team had to hide and then get back to base without being spotted by the other team. We quickly developed some effective strategies to win!
In our second session a dragon called Sneezy had left us a letter. We had to help him find all the wool from his house which he'd sneezed away. We then had a bug hunt and demonstrated fabulous problem- solving and teamwork when making obstacle courses.

This week we have been learning about addition and subtraction.

We talked about the coming of the Holy Spirit and it feeling like the wind again, finishing our poster together.
Physical Development
We have been balancing, jumping, developing our racket skills and playing cricket.
Expressive Arts and Design
We have started an art project about landscapes.
This week we painted pieces of paper, we then tore them to make our landscapes and dinosaur land.
Understanding the World
This week we continued to learn about maps. We made a map of last week's trip to the library.
Forest School
We remembered how to use the hammers safely. We used them to make patterns on cardboard by hammering nails and screws on their side.
We also had a great time playing behing the hedge, making up stories, climbing trees and running free!

This week in Year 2
English
This week we have written poetry about the Earth and the Ocean. We discussed climate change and thought about important changes we need to make.

This week we have been learning about measuring. Today, we explored different equipment used for measuring.
RE
We read and explored new scripture this week from Galatians 5 22-23. We created beautiful artwork to represent the fruit of the Holy Spirit.
Forest School
We have been celebrating the month of May. We made willow crowns. We discussed which flowers we could pick. We practised our knot-tying skills.
Computing
We created a program for our friends to step carefully around the classroom on a large grid on the floor whilst using directional language.

This week in Year 3
This week has been jam-packed with exciting learning opportunities in our classroom. We finished reading the thrilling mystery story, 'The Deathwood Letters', and were inspired to retell the story in our own words. We also interviewed each other and recorded our own book reviews.
In maths, we have been learning about position and direction, focusing on positional vocabulary and following intructions. We also started our time topic, learning how to read time to the nearest minute. Try and practise telling the time at home this week.
In Computing this week we have programmed our very own flappy bird games. Check out our gallery to play these on your devices at home.
In RE we have been learning about Pentecost and the gifts of the Holy Spirit this week. We also went to mass on Ascension Thursday and celebrated the feast day with Fr Michael.
In History this week we looked at ancient Egyptian artefacts and tried to figure out who might have used these in Ancient Egyptian society. Have a look in our gallery.

In English, we have been busy writing parts and learning them for our Parent Assembly next week. In addition, we have been listening to the class novel.
In Maths, we learnt how to find quantities of amounts. We used bar models/ pictorial representations, counters and base 10 to help us with this learning. To begin with, many of us found this tricky, however, with a little more practise, we showed a good understanding. In addition, we used bar models to help us add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, when the total crossed a ones boundary.
In RE, we learnt about some of the places Paul travelled to in order to spread the Good News and how he put his life in danger by undertaking such hazardous journeys. We also went to mass on Thursday to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension.
In Science, learnt about the different types of teeth found in humans and their functions. We also discussed ways to look after our teeth and ensure our mouths and gums are healthy.
In Art, we created some beautiful artwork for our Parent Assembly.

It’s been a lovely week in Year 5 this week. We have only had four days in school, but have done lots of exciting learning.
In history, we started our new topic about Ancient Maya. We tried some of the food the Maya people used to eat including avocado, cocoa and corn. We thought about clues these foods gave us, such as the Maya people must have lived near rainforests and were gatherers. We also watched a video to introduce the topic.
We followed our history lesson with an art lesson. We read a story called Rain Player - you can read the story in the file attached to this blog. This story was set during the Mayan times. It tells the story of a boy who challenged a God to a game of pok-a-tok (similar to football) and won! We then used the illustrations from the book to create our own piece of art. They are all amazing!

In RE we watched a video and read some scripture about the Ascension. We then retold it in our own words. We also attended Ascension Mass in church.
In maths we have been using our knowledge of multiplication and division to convert between measures.

We have been learning through a new book this week: The Enormous Crocodile! We found out that the crocodile had secret plans and clever tricks. We identified his tricks, found adjectives in the story and we used the -er and -est suffixes in our writing. We wrote some brilliant sentences such as 'The Enormous Crocodile is the strongest' and 'Muggle Wump is smaller than Trunky the elephant.'
Phonics
Some of us have been revising oy as in toy and oi as in coin. We have also revised ir as in bird and ur as in burn.
Some of us have been learning the different ear spellings: ear in hear, eer in deer and ere in here.
Maths
We have been learning how to find halves of amounts by sharing. We have also been practising our counting in 2s,5s and 10s.
R.E.
We continued to read about Jesus' Ascension. We wrote speech bubbles for what was said by both Jesus and His disciples.
Art
We made our own feathers out of the craft materials that we have in the classroom. We used our imagination, creating different coloured and sized feathers.
Science
We went outside and found different leaves. We talked about how leaves are a part of the plant and how we can use the leaves to distinguish which plant it came from. We drew two different plants and labelled the parts.
Forest School
We baked bananas with chocolate buttons in them.Yummy !

Spelling Challenge
We have had a great week this week, made even better by a little bit of sunshine.
In English we continued reading our class novel Varjak Paw. We have been learning about subordinating conjunctions. We used this video to help us remember what a subordinating conjunction does, and some examples. Have fun singing and dancing along at home.
In maths we have been multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 and using these skills to solve problems, including converting between measures such and centimetres and metres.
In RE we enjoyed re-enacting the conversion of Saul to Christianity. We thought about the feelings and experiences of the different people who were there.
We started our new geography topic all about Europe and Greece. We recapped the continents by singing our beloved continents song.

This week in Year 2
English
We continued our novel called 'Dear Earth' by Isabel Clara Anganuzzi. The children have written brilliant speech bubbles for how the Earth is feeling and the steps we can all do to help, created a poster to pursuade people to clean up the Earth and wrote an acrostic poem for Earth.
Maths
This week we have learnt how to solve multiplication and division worded problems.
RE
We learnt all about the Scripture from Saul. We re-told the story of Saul using pictures and captions.
Forest School
We made shelters and pretended a storm was coming! Superb team-work and problem solving. We are also becoming more proficient when tying knots.
Art
We explored acrylic paintings from famous artists including Van Gogh. The children re-created one of his paintings using two different mediums.
PSHE
In PSHE this week the children have looked at the roles of people who help us in our community. We have also had a big focus on taking time to write in our feelings book each day after dinner. Here the children can write down any feelings they have (good and bad).

We made fossil pictures using sand, glue and pasta.
Understanding the World
This week we have been extending our vocabulary by learning the word extinct. We have been learning what this means and looking at animals from the past that are extinct, like; a sabre toothed tiger and a wooly mammoth.
We also had a fabulous walk to Longton Library this week. Nick read two stories to us about under the sea animals and we made our own crab!

In English, we revised instructional writing and labelled up a set of instructions. We then planned and wrote our own set of instructions to make a firework. We challenged ourselves to include interesting ingredients, time conjunctions and bossy (imperative) verbs. We have been very creative are incredibly proud of our instructions.
In Maths, we learnt how to add and subtract using different methods. First, we used a number line and ensured we bridged though a multiple of 10 efficiently. Then, we used a mental compensating strategy when the number we were adding or subtracting had a 9 in the ones place. In addition, we have been practising our tables in preparation for our Multiplication Tables Check at the beginning of June.
In RE, we learnt about Paul’s conversion on the road to Damascus. We watched a video which told his story and then wrote about Paul’s character both before and after this event.
In Geography, we learnt about the 4 different layers of the rainforest – the forest floor, understory, canopy and emergent layer - and the vegetation / animals found in each. We then drew / coloured in the different layers and wrote our findings up.

Home Practice
Phonics - g words (soft g sound) OR or words (er sound) OR ph words.
Maths - Subtract within 20 OR year 2 subtraction (some children have asked for trickier maths sumdog!)
Counting - Count in 2s, 5s and 10s starting at different numbers, 12,22,32 and so on.
Reading - Please try to read each night, it makes a big difference!
English
We have been learning through the story of 'There's a Tiger in the Garden'. We quickly realised that Nora was using her imagination whilst out in her Grandma's garden. We used different connectives to make our sentences more exciting and our own imaginations to think of new objects that Nora could come across.
Phonics
Some of us have been revising the soft c as in saucers the and the soft g in cage.
Some of us have been learning the different /er/ spellings - er in pepper, ir in third, or in work and ear in learn.
Maths
We have been learning how to add and subtract using part-whole models and 10 frames.
R.E.
We started our new Bible story about Jesus' Ascension. We talked about what Ascension means and drew a picture of Jesus rising up to heaven.
Geography
Some of us made some amazing fact files about a hot place in the world (The Sahara Desert). We used the iPads to find new information, we learnt a lot of new facts!
Forest School
We made shelters and pretended a storm was coming! Superb team-work and problem solving. We are also becoming more proficient when tying knots.
Sports Day
We are so proud of the whole class. Everyone worked brilliantly as a team and individually. Well done to Bede who won the Year 1 Sports Day!

Home Practice
Well done to everyone who is continuing with their regular reading into the Summer term. 20 minutes every night with your school books will help improve comprehension and fluency.
We have set 2 maths challenges on Sumdog, one on multiplication and division and one on the x4 and x8 tables.
Practice counting regularly with your child as well. Regular reviews of the number system will help build understanding and number fluency. Sing our songs, play what comes next, count forwards and backwards in numbers and fractions.You can also use this arrow cards resource to help with your counting.
Your home spellings all have the ch spelling pattern. We have used new resources in our spelling learning this week. Scribble spellings, Spiderweb spellings and Snake Spellings are three fun ways to promote practise. You can find them below.

In Year 3 this week
We have a very busy term of learning ahead! You can see all of our Summer topics on our class curriculum overview on the class page.
In English this week we have been enjoying our new book, The Deathwood Letters by Hazel Townson. The story is written in letter format, following the correspondence between Damien Drake, a young boy who lives with his family on a huge estate, Deathwood Hall, and Frankie, a girl who lives in a run down part of town. They strike up a strong friendship and we have noticed some strange goings on already. We have written some letters in reponse to the characters and used our new iPads to record our ideas before writing.
In Maths we have been learning about equivalent fractions, and how to add and subtract fractions from a whole. Everyone has shown great understanding and used what they already know about fractions to solve problems. .
In Art we have been exploring different ways to make animated drawings and puppets. Everyone has shown great skills in their making and evaluating this week. Have a look in our gallery.
In History we learned all about Ancient Egyptian society and the jobs people had. Have a look at some of our ideas in our galley. We also used AI to create pictures of all the different jobs in Ancient Egypt.
In science we set up our seeds experiment and have been monitoring them to see which ones grow the best. Below you will find all the learning we will meet in the coming weeks.

Please read for up to 30 minutes every night, this will improve the speed at which you read and your understanding of the text. If you come across any new words that you don’t understand, ask an adult or look it up in the dictionary. Building up your vocabulary knowledge is really beneficial.

In English this week, we have been enjoying our new novel The 1000 year old Boy by Ross welford. Our main focus has been on reading comprehension and SPAG.
In Maths, we worked on time, ratio/proportion, fractions, decimals and percentages, finding percenatges of amounts and working out the mean, median, mode and range.
In RE, we wrote some lovely explanations of what we think the power of the Holy Spirit enabled the disciples to do.
In PE, we worked on our cricket skills and played mini-games. We thoroughly enjoyed the extra cricket session on Monday, which was game based - amazing batting and catching skills!
In French, we recapped food items and learnt the words for different drinks.
In Science, we carried out a whole class investigation. We observed what happened to objects when they were refracted through a liquid.

This week in Year 2
English
We continued our novel called 'Dear Earth' by Isabel Clara Anganuzzi. We wrote beautiful poems about our wonderful Earth using our book and celebrating Earth Day 2024. We have also written a diary to describe how beautiful Earth is and making suggestions for how we can make it better. We have also written a recount about our trip to Brockholes Nature Reserve.
Maths
This week we continued learning about multiplication and using arrays.
RE
We listened to more Scripture about Jesus from Acts in the Bible. We also celebrated how we show we are opening our heart to God.
Forest School
We also celebrated Earth Day which was on Monday of this week. We played our bee game again but this time we added in a waggle dance which is how the bees communicate with each other when they are looking for nectar.
We scattered some wildflower seeds because we know that they provide bees, butterflies and other pollinators with food. We also picked up all the litter we could find in our nature area.
Art
We created brilliant art with their own forest paint brushes. We explored the different textures and marks using acrylic paint.

Drawing Club and Understanding the World
We have been watching video clips of Blue Planet. We have been writing facts about the different sea animals we watched and then thought of an adventure for one to go on.
We have also been drawing maps of our School.
Maths
This week we have been learning about pattern spotting, subitising and looking at our teen numbers again.

We discussed Pentecost and the story from last week, where Jesus promised the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Then we read the story from the bible about Jesus going back to his Father in Heaven.
Physical Development
We continued to practice for sports day.
Expressive Arts and Design
This week we painted our clay minibeasts.
Forest School
We learnt how to use hammers safely. We then used the hammers, tracing paper, fabric and wild flowers to learn about hapa zome printing. This means 'leaf dye'. It is a Japanese technique of smashing flowers and leaves into fabric. We made some bunting for our classroom.

We have had a lovely week this week.
In English we wrote poems all about Earth Day. We used this poem as an example.

In maths we have been learning about prime numbers. A prime number only has two factors, one and itself. We have also been practising multiplying three-digit numbers by two-digit numbers. Everybody did such an amazing job.
In RE we have been learning about the Holy Spirit and Pentecost. We spoke about why Jesus died for us and how the disciples felt at the time.
We started our new topic in science all about animals including humans. We revised some features of mammals and their life cycles. We also looked at the life cycle of some insects including butterflies.

Home Practice
Continue to read regularly, 10-15 minutes every day.
Practise you number facts regularly too. Knowing these inside out will help your children succeed in their future maths learning. We have been using the White Rose Maths - 1 minute maths app in class this week. You can download this from the Appstore or the Google Playstore.
Please also practise counting in 10's from 10 to 120 and back again.

This week in Year 3
We are really enjoying The Deathwood Letters. The story is written entirely in letter format, following the correspondence between Damien Drake and Frankie, We explored these characters and found lots of differences between them.
In maths we have been learning about equivalent fractions and how to spot them. We will be learning about fractions all next week, so make sure to refresh your memory by completing the Sumdog challenge.
In Art we created some brilliant moving pictures. We will be creating puppets and other animations in the coming weeks.
In PE we have been working on throwing and catching as part of our striking and fielding topic. We have also been learning to play cricket and rounders to apply our skills.

Miss Whiting was very impressed with our Science learning this week. We planned an investigation on how to find out what plants need to grow. We also went outside to see the changes in our wild areas and what plants are growing on our school grounds.
