It’s been a lovely week in Year 5 this week. We have only had four days in school, but have done lots of exciting learning.
In history, we started our new topic about Ancient Maya. We tried some of the food the Maya people used to eat including avocado, cocoa and corn. We thought about clues these foods gave us, such as the Maya people must have lived near rainforests and were gatherers. We also watched a video to introduce the topic.
We followed our history lesson with an art lesson. We read a story called Rain Player - you can read the story in the file attached to this blog. This story was set during the Mayan times. It tells the story of a boy who challenged a God to a game of pok-a-tok (similar to football) and won! We then used the illustrations from the book to create our own piece of art. They are all amazing!
You can see our art work here.
In RE we watched a video and read some scripture about the Ascension. We then retold it in our own words. We also attended Ascension Mass in church.
In maths we have been using our knowledge of multiplication and division to convert between measures.
1 kilogram = 1000 grams
1 kilometre = 1000 metres
1 litre = 1000 millilitres
Have a super sunny weekend!

We have had a great week this week, made even better by a little bit of sunshine.
In English we continued reading our class novel Varjak Paw. We have been learning about subordinating conjunctions. We used this video to help us remember what a subordinating conjunction does, and some examples. Have fun singing and dancing along at home.
In maths we have been multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100 and using these skills to solve problems, including converting between measures such and centimetres and metres.
In RE we enjoyed re-enacting the conversion of Saul to Christianity. We thought about the feelings and experiences of the different people who were there.
We started our new geography topic all about Europe and Greece. We recapped the continents by singing our beloved continents song.

We have had a lovely week this week.
In English we wrote poems all about Earth Day. We used this poem as an example.
Our planet Earth.
Our planet Earth – so beautiful,
A planet of land and water,
How will it look for your children?
Or your great grandson or daughter?
Ask yourself, “Am I bothered?”
Ask yourself, “Do I care?”
Ask yourself, “Can I make a change?”
It’s a responsibility we all share.
Are you prepared to make a change?
Instead of driving, will you walk?
Or catch a bus or cycle?
Or is this just all talk?
We can all do our bit to help.
We can use less plastic each day.
We only have one planet Earth.
Let’s make a change, what do you say?
In maths we have been learning about prime numbers. A prime number only has two factors, one and itself. We have also been practising multiplying three-digit numbers by two-digit numbers. Everybody did such an amazing job.
In RE we have been learning about the Holy Spirit and Pentecost. We spoke about why Jesus died for us and how the disciples felt at the time.
We started our new topic in science all about animals including humans. We revised some features of mammals and their life cycles. We also looked at the life cycle of some insects including butterflies.
Have a super weekend!

It has been a great week back after the Easter holidays.
In English, we started our new class novel – Varjak Paw by S.F.Said. We are loving it! We have spent the week writing a non-chronological report all about Mesopotamian Blues which are the cats in the story. The purpose of our non-chronological reports is to teach the Year 4 children about the cats to help them understand the novel when they read it next year.
In maths we have been learning about factors and common factors.
The factors of 21 are 1, 21, 3, 7
The factors of 9 are 1, 9, 3
The common factors of 21 and 9 are 1 and 3.
In Art we started our new topic all about architecture. We are going to be looking at different architectural designs, making our own, and discussing if we think architects should fill the world with big and beautiful buildings or build more modest, eco friendly buildings.
We also started our new topic in PSHE. It is called: How can drugs common to everyday life affect health? We discussed drugs that are legal and illegal and spoke about different drugs which are used as medicines.
Have a happy weekend!
Well done for an amazing week this week!

We have had a brilliant last week of the Spring Term
We retold some chapters of our novel in our own words and as characters from the story. Everyone has tried to improve their presentation this week, well done Year 5!
In maths we have been revisiting the formal written method for addition and subtraction. We have been working with 4 digit numbers and remembering our place holders.
In In Science we researched the planets in our solar system and created fact files for each planet.
In DT we completed our straw house designs. They all stood up on their own and resisted some rigorous testing!
In French we learned how to ask for help at the doctors and how to describe our condition. Tres bien!
Have a fantastic Easter break and keep up the regular home reading!

We have had a great week this week. On Wednesday we were joined by Freddy Fit and enjoyed our workout. We spoke about the importance of both physical and mental wellbeing.
In English we continued reading our class novel - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We finished our character description of the professor using dialogue and action. Our objective was to describe a character who sounds eccentric to the reader. We then read our descriptions to Year 4. We didn’t tell the children our objective. After reading, we asked them to write a word to describe the professor. When they wrote unusual, strange, etc, we knew we had achieved our objective.
In maths we learnt about negative numbers and different methods to add and subtract. We spoke about where we might see negative numbers including lifts, football matches, and thermometers.
In RE we started our new topic all about Lent. We thought about giving. We also had a visit from Father Michael. He spoke to us all about saying sorry for things we had done wrong. We then each had the chance to say sorry to God with Father Michael.
In history we started to learn about the Vikings who arrived in Britain around 790AD. We discussed what the Vikings were like and reasons they might have come to invade Britain.
We have had a fantastic two weeks with Atsuya and the other Japanese students. It was amazing to learn about their culture. We were lucky enough to play with some traditional Japanese toys which we loved! Safe travels back to Japan.
Have a fantastic weekend!

We have had a very exciting week this week. We are very lucky to have been joined by 4 Japanese students who are training to become teachers in Japan. Atsaya has spent the week with us in Year 5 and has been very impressed.
In English we started our new class novel – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. So far, we have been introduced to the main characters and are starting to learn about Narnia and The White Witch. In our writing we have been using action and dialogue to describe the professor from the story. We all agreed that he was an eccentric character so we have been discussing things that an eccentric character would say (dialogue) and do (action).
In maths we learnt about the place value of numbers up to 3 decimals places. We also used our knowledge of place value to order and compare numbers.
In RE, we considered different parts of the Eucharist and discussed their significance. We read the Eucharistic prayer and wrote our own prayer to God remembering Jesus and the sacrifices he made for us.
We had a fantastic World Book Day. It was wonderful to see all of the different book characters and discuss our favourite books. We even managed to take part in our dance lesson dressed as the characters!

We have had a wonderful week this week.
In English, we wrote two different adverts to persuade different audiences. The first was an advert to persuade children to go to the circus. The second was an advert to persuade an adult to donate money to a charity which helps animals. The language we used was very different in each advert as they had different audiences and different purposes. We also recorded our adverts and used our voices as an additional way to persuade our audience. We tested out our circus adverts on Years 2, 3 and 6 who gave us a star rating for how likely they were to go to the circus after hearing our advert. There were lots of 7/7 ratings.
In Maths, we calculated the area of different shapes and also solved problems involving time. This included converting between 12-hour and 24-hour times and reading analogue and digital clocks. If you are not confident with reading the time, please practise at home this week.
In RE we made links between the Passover and the Last Supper. We discussed how Jesus would have celebrated the Passover each year to celebrate his people being freed from slavery. We also discussed how the Last Supper was a very special Passover feast as this was when Jesus knew he was going to die, and was the first time Jesus turned the wine into his blood and the bread into his body.
In art, we started our new topic about landscapes. Throughout the topic we will be using different media to create pictures of landscapes. These will include pencil, ink, paint, charcoal, pastels, etc. This week we used different sketching pencils. Everybody did such a fantastic job.

We have had a wonderful week this week.
In English, we finished reading our class novel Street Child. We wrote a persuasive radio advert to persuade children to go to the circus, this was after reading about the circus that the main character Jim visited. The focus was on using vocabulary and sentences that would persuade a child.
In Maths, we have been solving problems involving multiplication. We used different strategies including doubling and halving, and drawing bar models.
In RE, we watched videos about the Jewish festival Passover. We then wrote a diary entry as if we were one of the slaves freed from Egypt. We focused on what life had been like and how Passover would be remembered in the future. We also made our Lenten promises, we spoke about saying sorry for the things we have done wrong and turning over a new leaf. We all decided something we would do during the season of Lent to become a better person.
We had a sporty day on Thursday with a dance session from South Ribble and our PE lesson. We loved learning a new dance and in PE we did some tag rugby and gymnastics. Everybody was amazing!

On Monday, we finished our set designs for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They all look amazing! Take a look at our gallery to see us in action and our finished pieces.
This week has been Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme this year is My Voice Matters. This theme was chosen to help us develop the skills we need to express our opinions, beliefs, values and feelings. We spoke about ways we can express ourselves including:
- Making choices
- Talking to a trusted adult
- Writing a letter or note to ourself or somebody else
- Voting on decisions
- Drawing a picture
- Creating a journal or diary
- Writing a song
- Having a check in system with somebody
We also celebrated our achievements and spoke about these proudly. We then came up with some positive affirmations all about My Voice Matters.
- I have important contributions to make
- When I speak, people listen
- I take time to listen and learn from others
- I feel empowered when I share my thoughts and feelings
- MY VOICE MATTERS

Maths
In maths this week we have been using our new method to divide and interpet remainders. It is so important that we know our times tables!
Our new method includes looking at our times tables and using related facts
2,600 ÷ 5 =
We can partition 2,600 into 2,500 and 100
25÷ 5 = 5
So 2,500 ÷ 5 = 500
100 ÷ 5 = 20
So 2,600 ÷ 5 = 520
English
In English we read more of our class novel Street Child. We also wrote a non-chronological report all about the Victorians.
A non-chronological report gives the reader facts about a topic and can be read in any order.
RE
In RE we spoke about Jesus' mission to teach, preach and spread the Good News. We read Good News for the Poor from Isaiah which was one of the scriptures Jesus first read when he started his mission in Nazareth. We thought about how the words would have helped and comforted people. We then came up with ways we can comfort people when they need us.
Geography
We thought about different ways humans have affected the landscape in Britain and had a really interesting discussion about: what if the government banned any more building in the United Kingdom?
Have this discussion at home, does everybody agree?
Science
In science we carried out a fair test to find out the effect water resistance has on different shapes.
We know that water resistance is a force which slows objects down as they move through water, it is a type of friction.
We made different shapes out of playdough and timed how long they took to fall to the bottom of a cylinder of water.
Have a happy weekend.

Happy Friday and Happy December.
Welcome to your Friday Blog.
On Wednesday, we brought home a sheet of paper with a list of things that we need for our DT work.
Our DT brief is to design, make and evaluate a Greek snack.
We have decided as a class to make pitta breads. School will provide the ingredients for everybody to make the pitta bread.
Most children decided they wanted to include something along with the pitta bread. This is what they need to bring in from home, for example: feta cheese, olives, salad, tzatziki, etc. The children also wrote a list of utensils we will need. Anything that we can borrow would be much appreciated, but if not, don't worry.
We will be making our Greek snack in school on Monday 4th December.
In Geography this week, we used maps and our knowledge of the UK to plan a trip for somebody coming to England. Our trip had to include a flight to our closest airport, a visit to our local area and some local attractions, and finally a visit to the closest capital city to us and some points of interest. Everybody's knowledge of the UK was very impressive and we came up with some exciting sounding trips.
In History, we have been learning about the Anglo Saxons. We discussed why we thought the Anglo Saxons settled in Britain. Some of the reasons we discussed included:
They settled in Britain to fight the Britons after they were left weak.
They were invited to help out when the Romans left the Britons vulnerable to attack.
They came because the land in Britain was better for growing crops.
They came for a better life where there would be more opportunity to earn money.
In RE we have started our new topic Advent.
Advent is a time to remember God’s promise to send a Messiah. It is about waiting in joyful hope for the coming of Jesus at Christmas.
In Maths we have been naming, measuring, and drawing different angles including:
Acute angles - between 0 and 90 degrees.
Right angles - 90 degrees.
Obtuse angles - between 90 and 180 degrees.
Reflex angles - between 180 and 360 degrees.

Happy Friday and welcome to your Friday Blog.
We have had a super week this week.
As you know, this week we did our RSE lessons. We talked about changes that males and females go through during puberty including physical and emotional changes. The children were extremely mature and sensible, and asked lots of questions. The children said they felt happy to learn about the changes they are experiencing or will experience in the future, and said that it was good to know that it is all normal.
In English we continued reading our clas novel Room 13, we have nearly finished now and it is getting very exciting. We have really enjoyed this book and can't wait to find out what our next novel is.
This week we have been focussing on starting our sentences in different ways so that our writing is more interesting for the reader. We found sentence starters in some books and pieces of writing and then tried to use these in our own writing. Here are some that we came up with:
Adverbials of time
At the stroke of midnight,
Eventually,
Suddenly,
Adverbials of place
The abandoned house...
Out of the darkness...
Somewhere in the distance...
Adverbials of manner
Hesitantly,
Carefully,
In maths we have been using bar charts, tables and line graphs to answer questions. We know that before answering questions we need to first look at the graph to learn:
What is it about?
What steps are the axes counting in?
In science we planned and carried out a fair test to investigate the amount of friction on different surfaces. We chose 5 different surfaces and measured how far a toy car could travel on each surface.
In order for our investigation to be a fair test, we knew we could only change one thing, and everything else would have to stay exactly the same.
We then made our predictions by stating which surface we thought would produce the most friction and which surface would produce the least and why.
We carried out our investigation in groups, recording our results in a table. Finally we wrote a conclusion where we stated whether our not our prediction was correct and how we could make the investigation more accurate. We also spoke about anything that surprised us.
Everybody did an amazing job at working scientifically.
In PE we did some rugby skills and also some handball skills. In rugby we learnt how to throw and receive a swing pass, and then we played some games to put our new learning into practice.

Help the homeless – Foxton Centre Big PNE Sleepout Friday 17th November
Miss Smith and Mrs Dexter are sleeping by the football pitch at PNE’s football ground, Deepdale Stadium this Friday 17th November. This is to raise money for a day centre called The Foxton Centre who provide food and warmth to the homeless people of Preston. Miss Smith and Mrs Dexter will sleep on cardboard and will only have with them what they can carry. This will give them an insight into how difficult it is for people sleeping on the streets, particularly as the nights are getting colder. We are all fortunate that we have food and somewhere warm to go to sleep every night, this is not the case for some people in Preston. Miss Smith and Mrs Dexter are asking for sponsorship, any donation would go a long way to help Preston’s vulnerable homeless community.

Happy Friday and welcome to your Friday Blog
We have had a very busy week this week. We spent a lot of time writing, practising, and perfecting our assembly which we performed for parents on Thursday. Everybody was extremely proud as it was all our own ideas and things that we felt proud of. It was nice to remind ourselves that – IT’S GOOD TO BE ME!
We had a visit from a familiar face on Tuesday, Freddy Fit. We always love our lessons with Freddy Fit where we learn about teamwork, resilience, and looking after our body as well as our mind. Freddy was impressed with everybody!
You can see us getting sporty in our gallery here.
This week has also been Anti-Bullying Week. The theme this year was Make a Noise About Bullying. We spoke about bullying online and offline and considered who we could speak to if we have concerns about bullying, advice we can give, and ways we can comfort and stand by each other.
You can see a film about Anti-Bullying Week here:
On Friday we all dressed in our pyjamas to raise money for Children in Need. It was great to see everybody come together for such a great cause.

Happy Friday and welcome to your Friday Blog.
It has been a great week filled with lot of exciting learning.
In maths we have been using the written method to add and subtract. It is really important that we know our number facts so that we can calculate quickly and accurately. Please practise these at home.
In English we have continued reading our class novel Room 13. This is a suspense story so we have been looking at different ways the author builds suspense. We then wrote our own suspense story. We tried to use as many different techniques as we could to make the reader feel worried and scared. Some of the techniques included:
Don't reveal the threat e.g. a dark figure
Rhetorical questions e.g. Was something following her?
Reveal the character's thoughts e.g. She wondered if this was all just a terrible dream.
Cliff hanger e.g. There was nobody there, unless...
Suspenseful vocabulary e.g. murky, gloomy, staggering, dark, whisper.
Everybody did such an amazing job writing their suspense stories!
In PE we did some indoor athletics including long jump, hop skip jump, high jump, and speed bounce. Mrs Cookson was very impressed!
In DT we sampled some Greek food. This was to help us prepare to design and make our own Greek snack which we will be doing over the next couple of weeks. Most of us enjoyed the feta cheese, pitta breads and tzatziki. The olives weren't very popular. You can see us carrying out our sensory evaluation of the food here. We focussed on the appearance, smell, texture, and taste.
This week in French, we started our new topic of ‘Les Émotions’. We started the lesson by going through the vocabulary and discussing the differences between the pronunciation for masculine and feminine adjectives. We then wrote these in our books, translating what they mean. To check our understanding, we chose the right picture for each emotion shown and then started a game of ‘Qui veut gagner 1200€?’ (Who wants to win €1200?) where every correct answer from a multiple choice question would ‘win’ €100. This week was a practice, we will complete this again next week to see if we can remember the vocabulary.
In RE we have been learning about Judaism. We learnt about a special feast called the Passover. We discovered why and how the Passover is celebrated. Each year during spring the Jewish people get ready to celebrate the Passover or Pesach. Jewish people remember the story of how God delivered them from slavery in Egypt, how God still takes care of them and how there is still the need for freedom in some places of the world.

Year 5 Blog Friday 3rd November 2023
Date: 2nd Nov 2023 @ 8:28am
Happy Friday and welcome to your Friday Blog.
It has been a lovely week back after Half Term, so nice to all be back together again doing lots of exciting learning.
In English we started our new class novel - Room 13 by Robert Swindells. We are absolutely loving it. We have been looking at ways the author builds suspense to make the reader feel nervous and scared. We have been practising some of these techniques and will be writing our own suspense stories next week. Here are some of the ways we have identified to build suspense:
Short sentences to make the reader panic.
Longer, more detailed sentences to give the reader chance to reflect.
Show don't tell sentences where we talk about the character's actions to show the reader that they are scared.
Writing about an abandoned setting to make the reader worry for the main character.
In maths we have been practising different mental strategies for addition and subtraction. We then looked at a range of calculations and chose the most efficient strategy. This week we have been practising:
Reordering the numbers to make the calculation easier, for example 27 + 15 + 3 + 14 we reordered to 27 + 3 + 15 + 14 as we spotted that we can use number bonds to ten to quickly calcuate 27 + 3.
Compensation. This is where you round a number to the nearest multiple of 10, 100 or 1000 to make it easier to add or subtract. You then add or subtract the difference.
This week in French, it was Halloween! We completed a French wordsearch with Halloween vocabulary and translated each word into our books. We discussed whether some facts about Halloween in France were vrai o faux. We practised some of the Halloween vocabulary again and played ‘What’s missing?’ to help remember them.
In music we started a new jazz piece on the glocks, Three note bossa, looking at the structure and learning related vocabulary. We enjoyed a new song, Try Everything. We explored music with 2 beats in a bar.
Our trip to Rock and River was incredible. We loved doing zip line, climbing tower, low ropes course, air bag jump and going out on the lake in canoes. Check out the gallery on the Year 5 page to see us in action.

Year 5 Blog Thursday 19th October
Date: 19th Oct 2023 @ 8:19am
Happy Half Term!
What an amazing first half term we have had in Year 5. We have done so much learning and have settled so well into Year 5.
This week we finished reading our novel Goth Girl. We wrote our own epilogue for the story to tell the reader what the characters are doing a year in the future.
We have also been looking a poetry this week. We read a poem called - Please Don't Feed the Animals.
Please do not feed the ostriches
sandwiches
or the polar bears
éclairs.
Do not offer the wombats
kumquats
or the rattle-snakes
fruit-cakes.
Remember that piranhas
are not allowed bananas
or partridges
sausages.
Never approach a stork
with things on a fork
or the bustard
with a plate of custard.
No leopard
likes anything peppered
and meerkats
dislike Kit Kats.
Remember that grapes
upset apes
and meringues
do the same for orang-utans.
Most importantly– do not feed the cheetah
your teacher.
We practised performing this poem thinking about actions and which words to emphasize. We then made a list of nouns for precision. These are specific names of things e.g. Poddle instead of dog, Black Mamba instead of snake, Siamese instead of cat, etc. We found that these made the poem interesting and funny. We then used these nouns to write our own poem following the same structure as the model. Finally, we performed our poems using actions. They were incredible!
In maths we have continued looking at different methods to add and subtract. One of the methods we have practised this week is counting on to find the difference. This was a bit tricky but we did lots of practice.
This week in our French lesson we completed the rest of our Review sheet, which included the vocabulary for sports, hobbies and the weather. The children had to write down and say which was their favourite sport, which hobby they like, which hobby they love and what the weather was like today. Year 5 have worked hard this half term recapping a lot of vocabulary and completing both review sheets. Next half term, we will be ready to have some new sessions about ‘emotions’ (after we’ve learned about French Halloween!).
In music we learnt a new rap, Fresh Prince of Bel Air. We learnt more about strong beats, clapping along to the song Crazy Glue. We made a video of our final performance of Sailor Sailor on our recorders.
Have an amazing, happy, safe half term.
You all deserve a rest you have worked so hard!
Please try to keep up with the reading and Sumdog is still available to practise spellings and times tables.
