Spelling Challenge
We have had a great week this week. On Wednesday we were joined by Freddy Fit and enjoyed our workout. We spoke about the importance of both physical and mental wellbeing.
In English we continued reading our class novel - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. We finished our character description of the professor using dialogue and action. Our objective was to describe a character who sounds eccentric to the reader. We then read our descriptions to Year 4. We didn’t tell the children our objective. After reading, we asked them to write a word to describe the professor. When they wrote unusual, strange, etc, we knew we had achieved our objective.
In maths we learnt about negative numbers and different methods to add and subtract. We spoke about where we might see negative numbers including lifts, football matches, and thermometers.
In RE we started our new topic all about Lent. We thought about giving. We also had a visit from Father Michael. He spoke to us all about saying sorry for things we had done wrong. We then each had the chance to say sorry to God with Father Michael.
In history we started to learn about the Vikings who arrived in Britain around 790AD. We discussed what the Vikings were like and reasons they might have come to invade Britain.
We have had a fantastic two weeks with Atsuya and the other Japanese students. It was amazing to learn about their culture. We were lucky enough to play with some traditional Japanese toys which we loved! Safe travels back to Japan.

Phonics
This week Mrs Stone's group have been learning the igh and oa sounds. Mrs Robinson's group have been learning the long oo and short oo sounds.
Maths
We have been learning about number bonds to 5 and 10.
Drawing Club
This week we have been reading the story; Jasper's Beanstalk. We had a beanstalk appear in class! At the end of the week it even got chopped down!
We have been writing the beginning,middle and end of the story and we even thought of our own ending.
R.E.
We have been learning about the events of Holy week, specifically Palm Sunday. We listened to a story about Jesus arriving in Jerusalem. We learnt the word Hosanna, which is what the people shouted to him. We each made our own palm leaves and acted out the story together.
Understanding the World
We learnt how a plant grows.
Expressive Arts and Design
This week we have had a lesson with the Japanese students all about oragami. We each made our own oragami art.
We wish the best of luck to them as they travel back to Japan this weekend. The children have loved having them in class.

In English, we read some more of our class novel – The Firework-Maker’s Daughter. We then revised the rules for speech / dialogue. Following this, we thought of lots of different words for ‘said’ which Lila and Rambashi (2 characters from the novel) would use. We will be writing our own dialogue between the characters next week.
In Maths, we compared and ordered numbers with tens, ones, tenths and hundredths. In addition, we placed hundredths on a blank numberline.
In RE, we started our new topic – ‘Giving: Self Discipline’. We read a story and discussed how feelings and beliefs affect self-discipline. We learnt that although being self-disciplined can be difficult, it can also lead to positive results.
We started our DT project this week. We practised 3 different types of stitches, then planned and designed our product. We will be making our product next week.
We need to remember to bring in any decorations we want to include on our product next week.
This week, we also enjoyed a trip to Formby Beach and Southport Eco Centre. We learnt a lot of information about the Formby coastline, and ways to be more eco friendly. It was an excellent trip and we gained a lot of knowledge from the experience. Have a look at our photos in the gallery.
In addition, this week we have taken part in an energetic keep fit session with Freddie Fit and a lesson led by the Japanese students, during which we learnt how to show hospitality in Japan. See the photos in our gallery.

We have set 2 maths challenges on Sumdog, fractions and times tables. A little practice every night does the trick!
Please also practise your counting in 10's. Start at 0 and count in 10's up to 210 and back again. For example, 0 10 20 and so on. Then count back 210 200 190 until you get back to 0.

This week in Year 3
This week we have started our new novel, Toro Toro by Michael Morpurgo. We have been spotting similarities in the story and The Butterfly Lion and writing descriptive pieces about Antonio's farm and the cork forest. Some brilliant pieces and a real improvement on spelling this week! Keep it up Year 3!
In maths we have been learning about volume and capacity and how to add 2 three digit measurements using the formal written method. Super learning this week!
In art we explored lanscapes in preparation for our final piece using fabric, paint and thread. Mrs Robinson was blown away by our work. Check out our gallery.
In geography we learned all about the United States and where it gets it's name. We used atlases and digital globes to locate some states on our maps.
On Friday, Year 1 came to read their Wild Things stories to us. Year 3 gave great feedback to the children. Great job year 1!
We have had a lovely couple of weeks with Yuri, one of our Japenese students. She made us some matcha tea and taught us a song called Totoro. Thank you Yuri for visiting us!

English
We are authors! We all wrote our own version of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE. We took great care to use full stops, capital letters, ambitious vocabulary and to keep our writing on the line. We tried to make our writing look beautiful on every page.
We read our books to the children in Reception, Years 3 and 4. They were impressed and also gave us some great feedback.
Phonics
Some of us have been revising ee in see, ea in leaf and e_e in Pete.
Some of us have been revising some of the different oa spellings - ow in snow and oe in toe.
Maths
We have been counting in the pattern of 2s, 5s and 10s. We have identfied where these patterns are on a hundred square and counted groups of different objects.

We had so much fun learning about Jesus teaching in the Temple. We realised that many people did not like Jesus and believed that He was not the true king. We role played King Herod and the leaders of the land against Jesus and His disciples.
Computing
You may have noticed that we have been practising how to upload pictures and videos to Seesaw. We now know how to open the iPad and record evidence of our amazing learning!

We planned our smoothies ready for next week. We chose our fruit and wrote some simple instructions.
Forest School
Some of us have been learning how to plant seeds.
Some of us practised our knots and made a forest eye.
There was also some super child-initiated learning involving making a stream, cooking with wild garlic and discovering a snail hide-out!
We have really enjoyed having the students from Japan working with us. Their professor, Yuichi, spent lots of time with us in Year 1, finding out how we learn in our school.
We also had a great time with Freddy Fit! He put us all through our paces and taught us about the importance of keeping fit and healthy.

In English, we worked on direct speech (inverted commas) and indirect speech (reported speech) linked to what the characters in our book might have said. Also, the children wrote some fantastic ideas for a sequel story, using modal verbs and adverbs of possibility.
In Maths, we were dividing decimal and large whole numbers using both mental and written methods (chunking).
The Japanese students delivered a fantastic lesson all about toys in Japan on Thursday afternoon. Year 6 had great fun playing with the toys and they learnt a few Japanese words too!
Last Freddy Fit session for Year 6, we had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the loud music and high energy lesson.
In RE, we discussed and wrote about the qualities of good friendships and things that might spoil those friendships with a focus on class unity.

This week in Year 2
English
This week we wrote lovely Mother's Day poems. The children also continued learning with the story 'The Lumberjack's Beard'. The children loved World Book Day - the costumes were amazing. During the day the children watched an author called Sarah Bowie share her illustrations from her novel 'Nina Peanut is Amazing'.
Maths
This week we have finished our learning about measuring. The children ordered different masses of objects and placed arrows to show volumes in measuring cylinders.
RE
In our learning this week, we wrote a lovely prayer about Jesus in the desert and thanked him for all that he has done for us.
Science
In Science this week, we have been learning all about Spring and we also went outside to observe and measure our Crocuses which we planted last term.
Forest School
We continued our learning about using tools safely. We used a hammer and a screwdriver. We learnt the difference between a nail and a screw.

Spelling Challenge
We have had a very exciting week this week. We are very lucky to have been joined by 4 Japanese students who are training to become teachers in Japan. Atsaya has spent the week with us in Year 5 and has been very impressed.
In English we started our new class novel – The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. So far, we have been introduced to the main characters and are starting to learn about Narnia and The White Witch. In our writing we have been using action and dialogue to describe the professor from the story. We all agreed that he was an eccentric character so we have been discussing things that an eccentric character would say (dialogue) and do (action).
In maths we learnt about the place value of numbers up to 3 decimals places. We also used our knowledge of place value to order and compare numbers.
In RE, we considered different parts of the Eucharist and discussed their significance. We read the Eucharistic prayer and wrote our own prayer to God remembering Jesus and the sacrifices he made for us.
We had a fantastic World Book Day. It was wonderful to see all of the different book characters and discuss our favourite books. We even managed to take part in our dance lesson dressed as the characters!

We went on our first trip to Bring Yer Wellies. This has enhanced our learning about growing. We learnt what plants need to grow and planted our own lemon thyme. We also looked at a wormery and what foods worms eat. We then did team building acitvities; den building and boatracing.
Expressive Arts and Design
On Friday we had a whole school yoga day.

This week in Year 3
We have had a brilliant week in Year 3! In English, we wrote police reports, retelling exciting parts of our novel from different perspectives and thinking about how the characters felt at different times in the story. We have seen a huge improvement in our presentation and spelling this week!
In maths, we learnt how to divide using repeated subtraction. We also explored how we can use a vertical number line to find groups and remainders.
In science this week, we took the opportunity to spot signs of Spring with the improved weather. We added to our nature journals and created scientific sketches.
We have been very lucky this term to have visitors from South Ribble to help us with our dance learning and mindfulness though yoga. We have been brilliant and can't wait to show you our dance!
We have loved having our Japanese visitors this week. We have been learning a new song and dance. We will also learn a little about Japanese culture next week.

In English, we made predictions about our new class novel – The Firework-Maker’s Daughter. We read an extract from Chapters 1, 2 and 3 and then thought carefully about the characters, the setting, and what we thought would happen in the book. In addition, we used evidence from the text to describe the main character, Lila.
In Maths, we learnt more about decimal numbers to two decimal places in the context of money. We also compared numbers represented by place value counters and coins.
In RE, we watched a video of The Concluding Rite which ends the Mass. We then described ways we can glorify God and explored Romans 12:8-11.
In Art, we practised sketching a flower. We then experimented with tints and shades by mixing a colour of paint with white paint. Following this, we painted a picture of a flower to go on a card.
In Computing, we practised retouching a picture. We will be putting all our photo editing skills together over the next couple of weeks in order to edit a photograph of our own choice.
This week we have also been to Reconciliation with Father Michael, taken part in a dance class and a yoga session, and enjoyed dressing up for World Book Day. Have a look at the pictures in our gallery.

In English, we continued reading Tuesday by David Weisner. We wrote excellent playscripts, remembering to use all the key features and related it to the story. In addition, we planned and wrote police reports based on what happened on Tuesday, using reported speech and formal language.
We all looked fabulous in our World Book Day costumes, we completed some book related wordsearches and crosswords.
In Maths, we have been working on translations and reflections. We have done very well with this, using the coordinates to help translate shapes and reflecting shapes through both the x and y axes.
Fr Michael came into school to do confession with Y6 on Thursday.
In Science, we learnt how we see things and labelled parts of the eye.
In Music, we revised 'Twinkle Twinkle' on the recorders and began to learn 'Old McDonald had a farm' with a new note F#.
In Art, we had a lovely afternoon making Mother's Day cards.
In French, we spoke about the clothes we wear and what other people wear.

For the first part of the week we were rehearsing our Mother's Day assembly. We all tried so hard to speak clearly and confidently. Thank you for coming to see our assembly-we hope you enjoyed it.
Then, we started our new learning through the story of Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. We discussed the story and all the wonderful characters. We are going to write our own version and make it into a book which we will read to other children in school.
Phonics
Some of us have been revising ee as in sheep and learning y as in happy. We have also been learning how to pronounce the e as in equal and remind.
Some of us are revising the different igh spellings, we have focused on ie in tie, i_e in time and y in cry.
Maths
We have been learning about the properties of 3D shapes such as cubes, cuboids and spheres.

We have been listening to the story of Jesus arriving in Bethlehem, otherwise known as Palm Sunday. We learnt that Jesus was welcomed by some people by them waving palm leaves, but He was not welcomed by everyone. There were some people who were angry and claimed that Jesus was not the king!

We have been learning about how to eat healthily. We learnt about the Eat Well Plate and the different sections (protein, carbohydrates, fats, dairy, fruit and vegetables). We talked about how we need bits from each section but they need to be in proportion.

This week we have continued to learn through our book ‘The Lumberjack’s Beard’. The children wrote a character description for Lumberjack Jim and explored great vocabulary from the text.

This week we started the Measurement topic. The children ordered mass from heaviest to lightest, read numbers on different scales and compared different weights for objects.
RE
In our learning this week, we wrote about the journey of Lent. We also discussed what happens on St David’s Day.
ART
In Art this week, we observed patterns, colours and shapes when drawing tulips. We also used a fork to experiment with the effects we could achieve when dragging it through paint.

This week we have been learning the ai and ee sounds.
Maths
We have been learning about one less than a number. We have been looking at number sentences and using beanbags to help us take an amount away.
Drawing Club
This week, we read the story; The Odd Egg.
We predicted what would be in the duck's egg. Then we designed our own machine to open the egg and drew how we would care for a baby crocodile.

We continued talking about Lent and revisited our Lenten promises. We listened to a story all about being sorry and talked about what we can do to make people feel better.
Understanding the World
We continued our new topic about Africa. This week we looked at atlas', maps and globes to help us find Africa. We talked about what the different colours meant and what they could be. The children were fascinated with the animals that lived in certain parts of Africa. We then created our own maps of Africa.
Expressive Arts and Design

In English, we experimented using adverbs / adverbial phrases in sentences and then moving them around to different places. This helped us understand how to use an adverb / adverbial phrase in our writing to make it more interesting, and we also became experts at recognising whether the sentence ‘sounded’ grammatically correct or not.
In Maths, we learnt that a tenth can be divided by 10 to create a hundredth. Using pictorial representations to help with our learning, we learnt the equivalence of tenths, hundredths, common fractions and the decimal forms of these.
In RE, we learnt about the different parts of the Communion Rite. We then wrote our own prayer for peace and unity. We also discussed ‘Living in Communion’ and what this means in daily life.
In PSHE, we recognised how people manage their feelings. In addition, we discussed how people show their feelings through their body language.
In PE, we practised our netball skills and then played a game. We also learnt some new ways to balance in our gymnastics lesson.
This week, we also took part in a brilliant dance session, a triathlon event and enjoyed the 'wear something bright' school disco. Have a look at our galleries.

This week in Year 3
In English this week we have been learning how to use persuasive language in our writing. Year 5 came and read their persuasive pieces to us on Monday and we wrote our own persuasive pieces about visiting South Africa. We then reorded our writing onto Apple Clips to make an advert. Super work Year 3!
In Maths, we learnt how to calculate fractions of shapes and numbers this week. We used our times tables and division facts to help us.
In art this week we explored mark making by different artists. Have a look in our galleries.
In Science this week we investigated reflections and how light sources and reflective objects differ. We had some great discussions and debates about how light works.
We also had lots of visitors this week. On Friday, TriKids come to school and set up a triathlon for us to complete. Everyone gave it their all and supported each other brilliantly. On Thursday, we had a dance session, learning new dance skills and moves to Dance the Night by Dua Lipa! Check out our gallery!

We have had a wonderful week this week.
In English, we wrote two different adverts to persuade different audiences. The first was an advert to persuade children to go to the circus. The second was an advert to persuade an adult to donate money to a charity which helps animals. The language we used was very different in each advert as they had different audiences and different purposes. We also recorded our adverts and used our voices as an additional way to persuade our audience. We tested out our circus adverts on Years 2, 3 and 6 who gave us a star rating for how likely they were to go to the circus after hearing our advert. There were lots of 7/7 ratings.
In Maths, we calculated the area of different shapes and also solved problems involving time. This included converting between 12-hour and 24-hour times and reading analogue and digital clocks. If you are not confident with reading the time, please practise at home this week.
In RE we made links between the Passover and the Last Supper. We discussed how Jesus would have celebrated the Passover each year to celebrate his people being freed from slavery. We also discussed how the Last Supper was a very special Passover feast as this was when Jesus knew he was going to die, and was the first time Jesus turned the wine into his blood and the bread into his body.
In art, we started our new topic about landscapes. Throughout the topic we will be using different media to create pictures of landscapes. These will include pencil, ink, paint, charcoal, pastels, etc. This week we used different sketching pencils. Everybody did such a fantastic job.

We have beeen preparing for our Mother's Day assembly which is on Wednesday 6th March at 2.40pm in the hall.
We read the story My Mum by Anthony Browne. We have been writing prayers and descriptions of our mums.

Some of us have been revising ch as in cheese and learning ch as in echo and ch as in chef.
Some of us have been finishing our ai spellings. We looked at eigh in eight, a in acorn and ea in steak.
Maths
We have been recapping the various 2D and 3D shapes. We also recapped the mathematical vocabulary of vertices, edges, sides and faces.
Science
We started our weather topic. We watched videos of different weather patterns - sunny, rainy, cloudy and snowy. We then drew our own pictures of each type of weather.
History
We learnt all about Florence Nightingale and how she is significant. We learnt that Florence helped change the way that hospitals are run and how she taught nurses to prevent diseases from spreading.
Art
We made our Mother's Day cards. We sketched a rose using our spiral technique that we learnt in Autumn term, then painted them.
Forest School
We made soup using water boiled in the Kelly Kettle. We made full use of the new shelter on one of the days when it was raining hard!

World Book Day is on Thursday 7th March. Get your costumes ready!
In English, we have started our new book Tuesday by David Weisner. The children became police detectives and investigated what happened on Tuesday. They chose witnesses to interview and wrote a list of questions designed to help the interviewee retell as much interesting detail as possible. We will use these to write a playscript and report next week.
In Maths, we have been working on coordinates and geometry. Year 6 described positions in four quadrants, used coordinates to complete shapes and worked out the coordinates on blank axes.
In RE, we finished writing our letters in the style of St Paul to the children in Y2. Hopefully we will be able to read them to Y2 next week.
In PE, we continued tag rugby skills and games. We also had a triathlon session which included swimming arms, riding bikes and running. Year 6 were really good at it, despite the rain!
In Music, the children played Guess the time! and Twinkle Twinkle on the recorders (new note F sharp).
Zentangle Art was fun and the patterns were very detailed.
In History, we learned about different crimes and punishments during the Tudor period and how that changed.

In PSHE we discussed different feelings we could have. we then designed our own feeling monsters.

This week, we wrote our Lenten Promise. We thought about how we could be a better person in the short time of Lent.

We learnt how to use hammers safely. We used them to knock nails in to wood.
We also went in the very muddy nature area. The child-initiated learning was briliant-floating and sinking, mixing up mud and water, making a stream, cooking and building dams.

We have had a wonderful week this week.
In English, we finished reading our class novel Street Child. We wrote a persuasive radio advert to persuade children to go to the circus, this was after reading about the circus that the main character Jim visited. The focus was on using vocabulary and sentences that would persuade a child.
In Maths, we have been solving problems involving multiplication. We used different strategies including doubling and halving, and drawing bar models.
In RE, we watched videos about the Jewish festival Passover. We then wrote a diary entry as if we were one of the slaves freed from Egypt. We focused on what life had been like and how Passover would be remembered in the future. We also made our Lenten promises, we spoke about saying sorry for the things we have done wrong and turning over a new leaf. We all decided something we would do during the season of Lent to become a better person.
We had a sporty day on Thursday with a dance session from South Ribble and our PE lesson. We loved learning a new dance and in PE we did some tag rugby and gymnastics. Everybody was amazing!

We have been learning through the story of Scaredy Squirrel. He is scared of everything outside his nut tree. We drew pictures of what he is scared of and we labelled them. We wrote his new and improved daily routine. We also wrote an exit plan for him. We are trying so hard to write in full sentences.
Phonics
Some of us have been revising ie as in tie and learning ie as in chief.
Some of us have been learning some of the different ai spellings - ai, ay, ey and a_e.
Maths
We have been focusing on using the balance scales to measure mass. We used cubes and 10g weights to weigh different classroom objects.
R.E.
First we read the story of Zacchaeus. We talked about how meeting Jesus changed his life and how he decided to give back what he had taken.
Then we read the story of Jesus being tempted in the desert. We talked about how Jesus did not listen to the Devil and how he did not eat for 40 days. Miss Fisher tempted us with marshmallows but nobody gave in!
We also wrote our Lenten promises.
Art
We had so much fun making our own medals! We used our plan to see what we would need and then chose how to decorate it.

In maths we have learnt how to use the compensation strategy to multiply by 19. We also solved word problems using the grid method. Super maths this week Year 3!
In Art we started our new topic of Cloth, Thread and Paint by exploring the work of the artist Alice Kettle. We watched her create some pieces and sketchbooked some ideas of our own.
